Why is Silicone So Good for Scars?

Silicone’s effectiveness has been proven time and time again in medical studies. In fact, silicone is a mineral that has many healing properties, and is used in a number of applications. There is growing interest in the potential therapeutic effects of water-soluble silica on human health. For example, silicon has been suggested to exhibit roles in the structural integrity of nails, hair, and skin, overall collagen synthesis, bone mineralization, and bone health and reduced metal accumulation in Alzheimer's disease, immune system health, and reduction of the risk for atherosclerosis. WebMD states that silicone can be used to treat a number of issues, including but not limited to:

  • Osteoporosis

  • Heart Disease

  • Stroke

  • Alzheimser’s Disease

  • Hair loss

  • Hair and nail strength

  • Digestive system disorders

  • Sprains and strains

  • Skin healing (reduces the appearance of scars)

It’s only natural that topical scar treatments that include silicone on the ingredients list are favored by both dermatologists and patients alike. It simply works.

How does silicone scar gel work?

Silicone acts as a barrier to water loss, and helps lock in moisture. Contrary to popular belief, letting a wound “dry out” is not conducive to proper healing. Wounds will not heal effectively if they are dry. The reason silicone works so well topically is that it locks in the moisture on the top layer of skin, or the dermis.

The added moisture barrier that silicone adds not only helps cosmetically by reducing the raw and red appearance of a scar, it also helps with pain and itching relief. In other words, softening the scar and boosting skin elasticity are both silicone’s specialty. Bottom line is that silicone comes in first place when it comes to topical scar treatment, and other solutions are not even close.

Be mindful of ingredients

It’s one thing for a scar gel to have silicone listed in the ingredients, but you need to make sure of the other ingredients in the formula. While all the ingredients may stand well on their own, they might actually have a reduced effectiveness when combined.

ScarMD Silicone Scar Gel is a unique formulation of silicone that dries to form an ultra-thin layer on the skin. The reviews are in, and our customers are telling us that our formula beats out the rest when it comes to results.
