Last week, we put a strong emphasis on what foods you could work into your diet for optimal skin health, and we hope you learned a thing or two from us! But for every food that you should be consuming regularly, there are quite a few foods that you should also consider avoiding as you continue your journey down the road to radiant, glowing skin.
In a way, you have to think of your body as a machine, or a vehicle that transports you from place to place. Sure, regular fuel will get you where you need to be, but we all know that filling up with premium fuel will not only extend the life of your machine, but have you feeling your best throughout your journey. In other words, you are an organic machine, who deserves only the finest fuel sources you can find.
With that being said, we wanted to compile a list of foods that you should try to avoid, because not only will you feel your best in doing so, your skin will also thank you for treating it so kindly!
Be sure to avoid these foods
We wanted to make a quick side note that we’re talking about the aggregate effects of diet over a long period of time. Though eating clean is the way to go, we understand that life can be quite busy, and you’re not always going to be in a position to prepare your own healthy food. Additionally, a celebratory drink from time to time will not cause your progress to falter if you exercise moderation in your consumption.
Processed foods: Consuming processed foods, which are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, may lead to inflammation in the body, which can result in skin problems like acne and wrinkles. Processed foods include the kind of meals you find in the freezer aisle in the grocery store, but also includes that ever-so convenient trip to the drive-thru that is oh so tempting when you’re in a rush.
Dairy products: Some studies suggest that consuming dairy products, such as milk and cheese, may worsen acne in some people. Though everybody’s body is different, there is definitely a correlation between high levels of dairy consumption, though it may not affect you as severely as others. Luckily, there are so many non-dairy milks on the market today, that if you are particularly sensitive to dairy, then you have a lot of options to fall back on.
Sugar: Foods high in sugar can trigger inflammation and cause collagen breakdown, which can lead to wrinkles and other skin problems. If you’re undergoing scar treatment, and have been up to speed on our blogs, then you may already know that collagen production is crucial to your healing process.
Fried foods: Consuming fried foods can increase inflammation in the body and lead to acne and other skin issues. We know that a side salad doesn’t always have the same appeal as a piping hot plate full of french-fries, but like we said, moderation is key! We’re not saying to never enjoy the fried foods that you enjoy, but eating them sparingly will pay off with huge dividends in the form of better skin.
Alcohol: Drinking too much alcohol can dehydrate your skin and lead to a dull complexion. We’ve stated the importance of hydration in the past, and it’s for good reason. Not only will you feel better if you’re drinking plenty of water, being hydrated is the best way to flush toxins out of your system.
Gluten: Some people with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease may experience skin problems like rashes and eczema when consuming gluten. Though people who are not afflicted with gluten intolerance may not experience issues of this kind, it’s certainly worth mentioning. You may not be medically diagnosed with gluten intolerance, but cutting down on your gluten intake may yield positive results.
It's worth noting that everyone's skin is different, and what may negatively affect one person's skin may not affect another person's skin in the same way. However, in general, a healthy and balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein is beneficial for skin health.
Consider a Proper Topical Solution as Well!
Whether you’re trying to reduce the visibility of a scar, or your stretch marks, or are afflicted with Atopic Dermatitis, we’re standing in your corner and rooting for you as you continue to find new and exciting ways to take care of yourself. Our product suite is designed to be cut above our contemporaries, in the fact that our solutions are medical grade, and designed to be gentle on your skin as you heal.
If you’re doubtful about pursuing topical treatments at home, feel free to consult your physician, because they will be able to steer you in the right direction. The important takeaway is that your skin care journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Though we’ve presented you with a list of foods to avoid consuming regularly, this is not the letter of the law. It’s okay to occasionally indulge, and let loose a little bit. After all, you only live once!
